How to shoot a beauty editorial with only one light

I used to think I needed a ton of lights and modifiers to get a great shot. But the more I shoot, I am realizing that sometimes less is more. For this beauty test shot, I only used…drumrolls….one light! Read on to find out how!

My team and I wanted to re-create some Vogue/Hollywood beauty shots with a classic red lip and curls in the wind. I knew I wanted the lighting to be soft and even because most classic Vogue beauty shots have that feel. I also wanted the background to be grey as most Vogue shoots have neutral backdrops as to not take away from the styling/makeup looks.

THE SET-UP:

  1. I started off my set up with a large octa box as my key (main) source. I typically put my key light on the right side at a 45 degree angle for beauty shots.

  2. I then added a large silver reflector on the model’s lap for some additional fill light under her eyes, nose and chin for a more glowy look.

  3. I placed a white backdrop and didn’t light it because I knew the key light would fill it a bit and make it grey. And that’s it!! Simple yet effective.

I’ve added a behind-the-scenes photo from my insta-story below of the set-up. Of course, you can always switch the lights around. For example, if you wanted more shadows, you can switch the key light to a bare bulb or with a grid modifier or perhaps omit the reflector. You can even use natural sunlight instead if you don’t have a large light source. The options are endless.

For my settings, I had the ISO at 200, F 9, shutter 1/160. I also set my white balance to the flash icon for a bit of a warmer feel. And here are the final shots! What do you think?
